Why Transfer to DomainShark

Practical reasons to bring your domain across to an Australian registrar that actually cares how you manage your names.

Free for Every .au

There are no transfer fees on any Australian TLD. .com.au, .au, .net.au, .org.au, .id.au and .asn.au all move across for free. Global TLDs like .com, .net, .org, .io and .co cost the usual 1-year renewal at transfer.

Usually Instant

Most .au transfers finish within a few minutes of your old registrar acknowledging the request. Sometimes it takes longer (2 to 5 working days) if the old registrar is slow to release the EPP code.

auDA Accredited

Your domain stays on Australian shores with an auDA accredited registrar partner. Same compliance and standards you're used to, with friendlier humans behind it.

Zero Downtime

A transfer only changes who manages the domain. Your DNS records, website and email keep working exactly as they did. You can update nameservers later, if and when you want to.

Modern DNS Tools

A clean control panel with sensible DNS record management for A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SRV and CAA records. Easy to find, easy to edit.

Real Support

Stuck on EPP codes, registrant transfers or contact mismatches? Email a real person who's been doing this since 1999. No bots, no scripts, just answers.

How a Domain Transfer Works

Three steps. Most .au domains land in your account within minutes. Global TLDs can take a few working days.

Grab Your Auth Code

Log into your current registrar and ask for the domain auth code. You might also see it called an EPP code, domain password or transfer key. It's usually a one click reveal, so copy it down somewhere safe.

If you can't find it, ask your registrar's support team. Under auDA rules they have to issue one within 5 days.

Start the Transfer Here

Pop your domain into the box at the top of this page and continue through to checkout. Paste in the auth code when prompted, double check your registrant details, and pay for the 1 year extension.

That's all you need to do. The transfer request goes off to auDA straight away.

Confirm and Done

Your current registrar gets a notification and either approves it or stays silent. .au transfers usually finish within minutes. If the old registrar is slow it can take 2 to 5 working days, and global TLDs like .com take a little longer again.

You'll get an email the moment the domain lands in your DomainShark account.

Quick Checklist Before You Start

A few things to check at your current registrar so the transfer doesn't bounce back:

  • Domain is unlocked. Toggle off the "transfer lock" or "registrar lock" in your current control panel. Most providers just call it Domain Lock.
  • Auth code (EPP code) in hand, generated by your current registrar within the last few days.
  • Domain is more than 60 days old. auDA doesn't allow transfers within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer. If you're inside that window, wait it out and try again.
  • Not expired. Renew with your current registrar first, then transfer. Expired or "redemption" domains can't be moved.
  • Registrant contact email is accessible. auDA may send a confirmation to the address on file.
  • Your eligibility hasn't changed. For .com.au, .au or .net.au you still need an active ABN, ACN or registered trade mark that matches the registrant.

Frequently Asked Questions

For .au domains the transfer is usually instant. Most finish within minutes once your current registrar acknowledges the auth code. In slower cases, where the old registrar takes its time releasing the EPP, allow 2 to 5 working days. Global TLDs like .com and .net carry a built in 5 day pending window before they finalise.

No. Australian domain transfers keep every day of your remaining registration and add one extra year on top. If you transfer with 8 months left, you walk away with 1 year and 8 months. The clock never goes backwards.

No downtime. A transfer only changes the sponsoring registrar, which is the company managing your domain's billing and DNS records on your behalf. Your nameserver records and existing A, MX and CNAME entries all carry across untouched. Your site and email keep humming throughout.

An auth code (also called an EPP code, domain password or transfer key) is a unique transfer key your current registrar issues for each domain. It proves you own the domain and authorise the move. Look for "Transfer", "EPP" or "Auth Code" in your current registrar's control panel. It's usually a one click reveal. If you can't find it, contact their support team. Under auDA rules they have to issue one within 5 days.

The usual culprits are an invalid auth code (just regenerate it), a domain that's still transfer locked at the current registrar, or a domain still sitting inside the 60 day window after registration or a previous transfer. Drop us a line with the rejection reason and we'll walk you through fixing it.

Generally no. Once a .au domain expires, the existing registrar handles renewal or the auDA redemption and drop process. Renew the domain with your current registrar first and then start the transfer. If it's already in the drop list, watch for it on SharkDEX and register it fresh once it becomes available.
